How did my sewer get blocked or backup?

Did the drain cleaner mention they found clay in your pipe? Did they run into a blockage?  You likely have a broken sewer pipe.  Over time, clay sewer pipes can break and collapse, causing obstructions.

Many homes from the 60s to 80s have cast iron sewer laterals. Cast iron pipes will corrode and shrink, causing uneven surfaces and blockages. Cast iron sewer lines can also rust through, causing backups.

Roots are a major culprit of sewer backups, especially with clay pipes. Roots can infiltrate the bells or hubs of the sewer pipe and break it, which always causes backups.
